  19. <p>     The Pentagon is poised to do what a hurricane could not: permanently
  20. shut down HOMESTEAD AIR FORCE BASE in Florida. In a report to
  21. be made public March 15, the Defense Department intends to recommend
  22. to Congress that Homestead Air Force Base be closed. Across
  23. the country, other communities await word on the fate of their
  24. military bases, but this closure will be a particularly bitter
  25. one. After Hurricane Andrew nearly destroyed the base last August,
  26. President Bush pledged that "we will rebuild Homestead Air Force
  27. Base." In the current budget-crunching climate, it seems unlikely
  28. that promise will be kept.

  30. <p>5% of X = $1 Billion. Solve for X.
  31. </p>
  32. <p>     And what is x? Just one of the most closely guarded secrets
  33. of the Central Intelligence Agency--the budget for its National
  34. Foreign Intelligence Program. And now the secret is out. In
  35. a letter to Senators before he left, outgoing spy chief ROBERT
  36. GATES urged them to reject a $1 billion cut in the program's
  37. budget. Senators described the $1 billion slash as a 5% cut.
  38. If 5% of the budget is $1 billion, the program's budget must
  39. be $20 billion. Intelligence officials, with a wink, confirm
  40. the figure. Basic math skills + common sense = government secrets
  41. revealed.

  43. <p>Silence and Sainthood

  45. <p>     The possible canonization of POPE PIUS XII, which the Vatican
  46. has been investigating for over 25 years, is drawing fire from
  47. a Jewish leader. Rabbi Marvin Hier, dean of the Simon Wiesenthal
  48. Center, says Pius XII (who reigned from 1939 to '58) was publicly
  49. silent during the Holocaust. Hier also says a letter he obtained
  50. from a Vatican official indicates that the nomination is moving
  51. forward. Father John Pawlikowski of the Catholic Theological
  52. Union in Chicago says outrage is premature: "The process is
  53. a long one, and any major decisions could be years away." Look
  54. for the issue to spark discussions between Catholics and Jews:
  55. the Jewish Telegraphic Agency, a wire service that goes to more
  56. than 100 Jewish publications worldwide, will release a story
  57. on the issue this week.

  61. <p>     To New Yorkers, DAVID LETTERMAN in Los Angeles is like Joey
  62. Buttafuoco in Paris. It just ain't right. But despite Letterman's
  63. decision to remain in the Big Apple, an inside source says a
  64. move to L.A. may have only been delayed. The latest scenario:
  65. Letterman will debut his new CBS show in August in New York
  66. City and take it out to L.A. for brief visits, and after about
  67. a year he'll decide which coast feels better. And what about
  68. the 4 million bucks CBS shelled out to buy New York's Ed Sullivan
  69. Theater for Dave? Says the source: "A small amount of money
  70. in the scheme of things."

  75. <p>     The hum started two years ago. Only some folks in Taos, New
  76. Mexico, could hear it. Mmmmm. Mmmmm. Residents began to lose
  77. sleep, suffer headaches. Mmmmmmmm. The residents called upon
  78. their U.S. Representative, BILL RICHARDSON, to look into the
  79. mysterious vibration. His investigation, which is continuing,
  80. has uncovered three U.S. Air Force projects that could be behind
  81. the noise: a structure used to bounce radar waves, a low-flying
  82. airborne laser laboratory, and helicopters. Recently, Richardson
  83. wrote Defense Secretary Les Aspin asking him to "make the necessary
  84. changes" to end the problem.
